Community Hub
The On My Side Community Hub (based at Hambro Hall) serves as a center for a variety of work and work-related activities aimed at empowering individuals with learning disabilities. It is also a disability resource centre offering free advice on everything from accessing accommodation to liasing with the local authority.
The Community Hub is more than just a facility; it is a center of engagement and a resource where people of all abilities can learn, create, and connect in a safe environment.
Our workshops in the Village
We offer workshops to the people we support, and to other local people with learning disabilities (contact us to join in).
Our workshop participants develop skills and gain a sense of achievement through their contributions to and enrichment of the community. There are sales of produced goods through the market stall at the village market, voluntary and paid work in local businesses, exciting displays of creative work through art, drama, Trainworks displays and more. These are just some of the ways the local community is enriched through the wider connections and contributions that are made.
The Community Hub is also a safe base from which people can move out into the community and take on work placements (e.g. in cafes or community initiatives). The staff team support the placements by helping people to settle in and maintaining regular contact with the placement.
SOME CURRENT ACTIVITIES IN THE COMMUNITY HUB:
Current workshops include: Potworks, Plantworks, Woodworks, 3D Modelling, Trainworks, Estateworks, Artworks & Soft Materials, Expressive Arts & Drama, Wellbeing, and Life skills.
Potworks is a ceramics workshop where people make and decorate pots. The pots may be planted with flowers or succulents, or filled with beeswax to make candles, and are popular items on sale through our market stalls.
Woodworks is an opportunity to create simple but attractive objects made of wood to sell at the market. The participants also spend time helping to maintain the nearby community garden.
Trainworks builds model rail layouts. Many different skills are involved, and the layouts are always popular attractions at our stall. Trainworks is also developing a ‘party train’ layout to take out and entertain children who are equally keen on trains!
The Estateworks group looks after our allotment and garden and does litter picking in public areas.
The Artworks & Soft Materials group allows for the exploration of topics such as expressions of inner life, and observational pieces using variety of mediums.
The Life skills workshops fosters the development of practical skills for greater autonomy. A personalised approach to skills such as cooking, home management, health and safety, money management, travel training, and preparation for work, helps participants gradually prepare for life transitions such as independent living and employment.
